Our Latest Liminal Times

As leaders, we often find ourselves living and leading in the liminal phase—the space in between. We heard a lot about liminal spaces back in 2020, and it feels like we're in one again now, as the future of work shifts before our eyes and we grapple with how (and if) to integrate AI into our workplaces.

To quote this HBR article (gift link) on leadership in liminal times, “Times of liminality are disconcertingly chaotic; therefore, a leader's job is to provide some firm footing for people, with assurances of what will not keep changing.”

Here are some tools we can use to do just that.

Curiosity.

Staying open to what is unfolding, and to what we learn along the way.

Values.

If we're rolling out new tools, structures, or AI initiatives, how do we do so in a way that aligns with what matters most?

Vision.

What will help us get there? And, how can we leverage tools and technology in a way that leads us toward our vision, versus taking us off course?

Culture.

Does this decision or initiative help us be more like ourselves in our best moments?

A few we can consider. What else would you add?
