Culture that is Contagious

Yesterday, a friend and I attended an event. We found ourselves chatting with two leaders from a company with way-above-industry-average client retention rates.

As we were talking, one of the leaders was enthusiastically talking about the company culture…

  • The culture is awesome here!

  • Managers have an open door policy, and they don't just say they have an open door policy, but they really do.

  • We do team building every quarter!

He ended with, “I've worked three other places, and can't imagine why anyone would ever want to leave. This is an amazing place to work.”

His enthusiasm was both genuine and contagious. If he would have been at a recruiting fair, there likely would have been a line forming around his table —with hopeful recruits lining up to submit a resume and hear more. His enthusiasm made me want to recommend this company to everyone in my circles who is looking for a job.

It led me to reflect on: what makes culture contagious?

What are the qualities and characteristics that lead us to love our team and our workplace so much that we, unprompted, want to shout about them from the rooftops?

And, what is the special sauce for our own organization that leads this to be true?

Culture can be defined as a set of collective behaviors.

So a simple, but powerful question becomes:
What are the behaviors that define ours?

I'd love to hear from you —what is the special sauce at your organization, and what are the behaviors that define your company culture? What brings your culture to life?

Feel free to reply and share, if you'd like.
