The Power of “Good Morning”

The other day, I was driving to a morning meeting when I noticed the crossing guard at the nearby elementary school.

Wearing his bright yellow vest, he looked into each car that passed, smiling and waving at every driver.

There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of cars that pass by during his shift.

He works in an area not exactly known for friendly or considerate drivers.

Yet every morning, he smiles and waves at every single car.

This small but powerful morning action is related to a concept within Expansive Impact, which is The Power of Good Morning.

It is the idea of connecting with each other, on a human-to-human level.

  • Saying good morning.

  • Knowing each other's names.

  • Taking a moment to pause and look each other in the eye.

  • Doing something that says, “I care about you as a human being.”

  • Showing care in small, meaningful ways.

Though the crossing guard can't say good morning to every driver, his smile and wave create a sense of connection for countless people before their day even begins. If that isn’t creating a ripple of impact, I’m not sure what is.
