Room for Serendipity
Yesterday, I stopped by my favorite coffee window between meetings (yes, the Hunny Bunny one!) and couldn't help but be swept into the joy that was being shared by a mother and daughter who were doing the same.
They were ordering, they were laughing, and the mom was making a video to send back to her family in out of state, asking all of the servers and the bar tenders and the baristas to “say hi!”
I asked where she was visiting from, and we all ended up talking for about 20 minutes. There were many points of serendipity —ranging from the city where they're from, where the daughter lives in proximity to us, to the school that she teaches at. We ended up exchanging numbers, and the whole conversation was a joy.
It reminded me of back in the day before our devices, when we were often just standing around in line, waiting to check out at the grocery store or for a drink at the bar or to pick up a friend. The days when we were, collectively, more oriented toward “looking up” at each other, and around.
It also reminded me that sometimes the most delightful conversations aren't planned and makes me wonder:
Where might we create just a little more room for serendipity this week?
A question I'm holding as we move toward the weekend.
