creating internal calm amidst external chaos

Let's face it: it seems that we always have some flavor of external chaos these days. So how can we create internal calm amidst external chaos?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Bookending our days: intentional mornings + intentional evenings.

  • Focusing on our sphere of influence: what can we impact, influence, or control?

  • Gratitude: filling our own cup, perhaps first thing in the morning.

  • Self-Reflection: in a way that isn't dependent on outside feedback or opinions. For example:

    • What was a win today?

    • What could I have done better, or differently today?

    • What is one small (or large) thing I'd like to celebrate?

    • How did I show up as a leader today?

  • Nourishment: through fresh air, colorful food, or drinking a glass of water.

  • Community: surrounding ourselves with people who make us better.

Steven Kotler, of the Flow Research Institute, also suggests that we reduce unnecessary decisions (what to eat, what to wear) and transitions/disruptions.
