Clarity, Empathy, and a Bit of Humor
Most of us in the US have heard the news about the FAA-mandated flight reductions due to the federal government shutdown —a 10% reduction in flights across 40 airports within the US.
Today, I wanted to highlight one small but impactful act of leadership during this time, which is this recent post from the Tampa International Airport.
Why is it great?
It provides an update and a “here's what we know” status, even though much is still uncertain.
It expresses empathy and acknowledgement that the situation isn't great.
It provides a clear and specific recommendation on what you can do if you're flying.
It feels like we are talking to a friend, and includes a bit of humor.
It is an act of leadership, and an act of care, during an uncertain time.
As leaders, we have a similar opportunity whenever we are navigating uncertainty or change with our teams. Some examples may include:
If our company is doing layoffs or RIFs
If our company is not doing layoffs or RIFs —it could be a great time for an update to employees, to provide a bit of an exhale when so many people are on edge
If we are asking people to work overtime or unusual hours due to unforeseen circumstances or outside factors
If we've recently had a number of high-performing employees depart
For our clients: if we've had team members depart, and they now have a new point person
What else would you add to the list?
Reflections
What is one opportunity I have to provide an update, or some greater clarity?
Is there an opportunity to provide a “here's what we know” update, even if some of the details remain unknown?
What is one small piece of communication that could help people to take a slight exhale?
