Clarity as a Form of Care.

After a years-long hiatus from yoga due to a combination of wrist issues and #life, I've been excited to tiptoe back into my practice over the last couple of weeks.

At the end of class, as we move toward our final resting pose, I've noticed that several instructors have said the same thing:

“I'll keep my eyes open, if you'd like to close yours.”

This is such a simple statement, but in this specific context, it is meaningful.

This statement says:

  • You are safe here.

  • I am holding this space.

  • You are free to rest.

Using language from Expansive Impact, it is a way of Creating a Clear Container.

And, as leaders, we often have the opportunity to do something similar.

We have an opportunity to create clarity about what others can expect and to create a feeling of safety for those around us.

  • This could be as simple as identifying a time keeper for our meetings and agreeing to end on time, so that everyone can be fully present rather than needing to watch the clock.

  • It could mean sending an agenda up front and giving people time to read it.

  • It could involve saying “thank you for the feedback,” and sharing what we will do with the input, even if we aren't able to implement it right away.

Sometimes, a small gesture or a simple statement is all that it takes to invite calm, safety, and clarity.

Have you experienced any examples of this recently?
