The longer answer: it’s complicated. In short, Amazon cuts its prices and therefore pays authors less; however, purchases through Amazon—and especially reviews—are extremely helpful to the book as it makes its way into the world.
Authors may make a slightly higher percentage on books that are sold directly through the publisher’s website; however, these sales don’t “count” toward the numbers of the overall sales of the books.
And, of course, it is wonderful and ideal to support independent bookstores whenever possible; however, many (most) will not keep books in stock if it is not a book or author that they are already familiar with.
