Business as a Force for Good

This week, I'm coming to you from NYC, where I've been attending/sponsoring the 1% for the Planet Global Conference, preparing for Business Bestie Brunch on Sunday, and connecting with a couple of humans who I adore —including Jenna from the Zing Collaborative team and Tara, the cofounder one of our nonprofit partners, TakeMAR

1% for the Planet

As many of you know, Zing Collaborative is a business member of 1% for the Planet.

This means that we donate 1% of all profits (top line, before expenses) each year to approved nonprofit organizations that support people and the planet. Collectively, 1% Members have given over $530 million, across 111 countries, to over 6500 environmental partners.

At this week's conference, there was one publicly traded company represented (TUMI) which means that most of these donations are coming from privately held, oftentimes small businesses, whose leaders care deeply about doing business differently.

At a time when there is so much heartache and suffering happening around the world, and so much division and vitriol happening online, it was beyond refreshing to spend the week with others who are committed to leveraging business as a force for good.

It's possible that you've heard me talk about ripples of positive impact. There were a heck of a lot of ripples coming out of NYC over the last few days.

I'll be sharing more details of the conference in the weeks ahead, but for now I wanted to share a photo. This photo, to me, represents the spirit of the week. At the table, we have conference attendees from The US, Canada, and South Korea. This was Jihyun and Misa's first time in the United States; they traveled 7,000 miles to attend.

Good THINGS

If you've felt at all exasperated or hopeless about the state of the world these days, I share this photo as a reminder that amidst all of the hard stuff, there is a lot of good that is happening, too.

If we look around and can't find any, it might just be a sign that it's up to us to create some.

With that, we will move on to this week's list of favorites below.

Thank you for reading, and for being part of this community.

And, a special thank you to our clients, to anyone who has been part of a paid program, and to everyone who has purchased a copy of Expansive Impact. Each of these purchases contributes to the $530 million impact that the 1% Community has been able to donate to people and the planet.

Questions to Ponder

  • What is one way that I can support a business that is “doing good?”

  • What is one positive ripple that I can start, or support?

  • Is there a business or person who I respect, admire, or am inspired by? What could it look like to tell them –or perhaps to leave a positive Google review (for the business) or Amazon review (for the product)?
